Emma Baines-Dinning

Hello

I'm Emma, a qualified and registered person-centred counsellor based in Elgin, Moray. With a compassionate, curious and non-judgemental approach, I support people in developing a deeper understanding of themselves and their experiences. Together, we'll explore what feels most important to you, at a pace that feels comfortable for you, helping you to reconnect to yourself and the agency you have over your own life.

I believe every person has the capacity for growth when they feel genuinely heard, accepted and understood. It is a privilege to be trusted with my clients' stories, and something I never take for granted. Having sat on the other side of the counselling room myself, I know how much courage it can take to begin therapy. Walking alongside people as they make sense of their experiences and witnessing their growth is deeply rewarding and at the heart of why I do this work.

How I can support you

Your emotional safety is central to how I work. I understand that healing cannot be rushed, which is why there is never any expectation for you to talk about painful or traumatic experiences before you feel ready. Our sessions will be thoughtful, collaborative, and conversational, giving you the space to reflect and explore at a pace that feels right for you. Throughout our work together, you'll be met with compassion, curiosity, patience, and respect, while holding in mind the courage it has taken for you to reach out.

Rather than focussing on what is wrong or how to fix it, my approach is guided by what happened to you and how you learnt to survive it. Together, we'll explore how your experiences have shaped the ways you've learnt to cope. Responses such as people-pleasing, perfectionism, emotional disconnection, or always putting others first often develop for good reason. At one time, they may have helped you stay safe or feel accepted.

As we deepen your understanding of these protective responses, we can begin to create the conditions where new ways of relating to yourself and others feels possible. This isn't about forcing change or getting rid of parts of yourself. It's about gently building a sense of safety, self-awareness, and self-compassion, so that old patterns no longer feel like your only option.

Through empathy, connection, and compassionate exploration, we'll work together to understand your experiences, honour the ways you've survived, strengthen your relationship with yourself, and support meaningful, lasting growth.

We may work well together if you'd like to:

  • Explore experiences or relationships that continue to affect you.
  • Make sense of patterns that no longer serve you.
  • Understand yourself with greater clarity.
  • Get to know the person you are beneath the ways you've learnt to survive.
  • Reconnect with yourself.
  • Develop greater self-compassion.
  • Build healthier relationships and boundaries.
  • Learn to recognise and respond to your own needs.
  • Experience meaningful personal growth and lasting change.
